Thunderbolts release date, cast and everything you need to know

Thunderbolts, er… assemble!

Thunderbolts' line up has been revealed, but whether it lives up to the heady heights of the Avengers team remains to be seen. The team-up film will be the final outing of the MCU's Phase 5.

The full list of Thunderbolts was confirmed at the the D23 Expo. While the team itself features familiar faces that movie fans are likely excited to see again, it also came as a surprise for those who know the line-up from the comics run.

Thunderbolts is Marvel's equivalent of The Suicide Squad, the team made up of a group of villains who are sent on missions commissioned by the government. There have already been hints in Phase Four about who the team members will be (more on those in a bit).

But what else do you need to know about Thunderbolts? We're here to help.

Thunderbolts release date: When will Thunderbolts be released in cinemas?

Marvel has confirmed that Thunderbolts will be released in cinemas on July 26, 2024 as the final outing of Phase 5.

Back in June 2022, Deadline reported that Marvel had been in touch with established MCU stars to keep their schedules free for summer 2023 for when the movie films.

We now know who those MCU stars are, but it's yet to be confirmed whether the movie will be filming next summer.

Thunderbolts cast: Who's in Thunderbolts?

As mentioned above, we now know who will be making up the team in Thunderbolts and it's an exciting crop.

The team is:

Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine
David Harbour as Red Guardian
• Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost
• Sebastian Stan as James 'Bucky' Barnes, aka The Winter Soldier
• Florence Pugh as Yelena Boleva
Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster
• Wyatt Russell as John Walker, aka US Agent

In the comics, General Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross led one version of the team, so it was thought he'd perform a similar role in the MCU where he was played by William Hurt. While it was initially assumed that he wouldn't be recast, Harrison Ford is stepping into the role in Captain America 4, so he'll likely appear in Thunderbolts too.

However, it's equally likely that Val will take on the leader role in the MCU version of the team and we've seen her recruiting US Agent (in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), and we saw her already working with Yelena in Black Widow.

Fans were surprised to not see Daniel Brühl's Baron Zemo as part of the line-up, but his last MCU appearance ended with him imprisoned in the Raft, so maybe he's got other things to deal with right now.

Thunderbolts trailer: Any Thunderbolts footage yet?

It hasn't even started filming yet, so you'll be waiting a while for any Thunderbolts footage. Sorry.

If the summer 2023 filming date is right, maybe we'll get something towards the end of 2023 if we're lucky. We're just speculating for now though, so don't hold it against us if you have to wait until 2024.

Thunderbolts will be released in cinemas on July 26, 2024.
