Jake Gyllenhaal stars in the first trailer for director Guy Ritchie's upcoming film The Covenant.

The military thriller follows Army Sergeant John Kinley (Gyllenhaal) on his final tour in Afghanistan. There, he is teamed up with a local interpreter named Ahmed (Dar Salim), who ends up risking his own life to carry an injured John to safety.

The tense trailer opens with John and his squad getting ambushed by the Taliban, before cutting to him back at home in America, admitting: "I don't remember any of it. I only remember... the interpreter."

It's then revealed that Ahmed took the job not for the money, but to seek revenge on the Taliban for the death of his son – and now his own life appears to be in grave danger.

"If it wasn’t enough for him to carry me across those mountains, now he’s hiding in a hole somewhere," says John. "I should be in that hole."

John now plans to return the favour, as he later adds: "Ahmed and his family are in trouble. I'm gonna have to get him out myself."

Other cast members include Alexander Ludwig (Vikings), Antony Starr (The Boys), Jason Wong (The Gentlemen), Bobby Schofield (SAS Rogue Heroes), Sean Sagar (Our Girl), Sina Parvaneh (Holy Spider), Emily Beecham (1899), Cyrus Khodaveisi and Christian Ochoa (Glow).

Ritchie co-wrote the script with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies, and co-produced it with Atkinson, John Friedberg, and Josh Berger.

Gyllenhaal is next set to star in a remake of the classic 1989 film Road House. While the original movie saw Patrick Swayze as a bouncer hired to work in a rough Missouri bar, the reboot stars Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who is hired at a Florida Keys roadhouse.

The Covenant will be released in US cinemas on April 21. A UK release date has not yet been confirmed.
