Black Panther 2 sets new Disney+ record for Marvel

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has become the most-watched Marvel premiere on Disney+.

While Disney has not revealed the viewing figures, a social media post reveals that the second instalment in the Black Panther franchise achieved the feat in the first five days it was on the streaming service.

Released in cinemas on November 11, the film made a quick transition to streaming after coming to Disney+ on Wednesday, February 1.

The film sees Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M;Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje fight to protect Wakanda in the wake of King T'Challa's death.

The sequel follows the death of Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman in 2020, following his four-year battle with colon cancer. Creators of the film confirmed his character would not be replaced, with the second film instead focusing on the wider residents of Wakanda.

Queen Ramonda actress Bassett has made Marvel history after receiving an Oscar nomination for her role as Queen Ramonda. The actor, who has been nominated for a supporting actress Oscar, is the first MCU star to ever receive an acting nomination from the Academy.

Additionally, the sequel itself is only the second Marvel movie to receive a Best Picture nomination, with the first Black Panther film being the other. It received seven nominations in total, winning accolades for Costume Design, Production Design, and Score.

Speaking about the achievement, Bassett said in a statement that she was drawn to Queen Ramonda's strength and was thankful to be a nominee (via Good Morning America).

"This morning is a little extra special in the Bassett Vance household with news of my Oscar nomination," Bassett said. "What has drawn me to each of the women I've portrayed throughout my career is their strength, compassion, resilience, and power."

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is now playing in cinemas worldwide and is streaming on Disney+. The first movie is also streaming on Disney+.
