Gotham star Cameron Monaghan on the importance of his Star Wars Jedi role

"We're seeing mature, smart stories being told."

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order star Cameron Monaghan has opened up about his role in the video game series, which he believes more actors will start taking part in.

Monaghan plays former Jedi padawan Cal Kestis in Fallen Order and its upcoming 2023 sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. He voices the character in the Star Wars game but also physically acts as him, too, via motion capture.

In a new interview with Sky News, Monaghan said that video games are "coming into their own as a story-telling medium".

"We're seeing mature, smart stories being told, which are every bit as in-depth and meaningful as film or TV can be," Monaghan said.

"Regardless of whether a performer has been on film, TV, or theatre, or might specialise in performance capture, or voice acting, there are so many performers that are getting their due through the video game medium."

Monaghan continued: "In any of them, you're just trying to find the truth of scenes and situations. As long as you're present and reactive, that's the most important thing you can do as an artist and a performer."

Monaghan explained that while the "dressing" around one as an actor will obviously change via the medium one is working in — be it in theatre, film, TV, or video games — each medium is still a performance, even if they do slightly differ.

"Obviously, the window dressing around it changes, on a set so much of what you're worried about might be your lighting or your wardrobe," Monaghan said.

"When you get on to a performance capture stage, a lot of it is a lot more technical."

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the entire Skywalker Saga are available on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K now, as well as on Disney+.
