Times are a-changing in the Worlds of DC following James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over as co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios, which has replaced DC Films at Warner Bros.
The pair officially took over at the start of November 2022 and have been busy developing their first slate of DC offerings, which is planned to be a shared universe across movies, TV shows and animation.
It's already led to some major changes in the movies side, and it can be hard to keep track of what's coming and when. So we're here to help with a list of all the confirmed DC movies that are on the way in the coming years.
(The information is accurate as of December 15, 2022, and is subject to change.)
2023
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Release date: March 17
Director: David F Sandberg
Starring: Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu Rachel Zegler, Jack Dylan Grazer
Helen Mirren is playing the villain Hespera and Lucy Liu is playing Kalypso, daughters of Atlas, in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, so we're not sure we need to know anything else about the Shazam! sequel. We'll be there opening night.
The Flash
Release date: June 16
Director: Andy Muschietti
Starring: Ezra Miller, Kiersey Clemons, Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton, Sasha Calle
Ezra Miller's Flash finally gets a solo movie after years of delays, and it's said to be pivotal to the future of DC, setting up the multiverse (or at least that was the plan). We can expect to see multiple Batmans, a Supergirl introduction and time travel as the Flash tries to save his mother from being murdered.
Blue Beetle
Release date: August 18
Director: Angel Manuel Soto
Starring: Xolo Maridueña, Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Susan Sarandon
Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña will make his DC debut as Jaime Reyes, a teenager who gains superpowers after an alien Blue Beetle scarab connects with him. Originally set for a HBO Max release, it'll now be hitting the big screen and marks DC's first Latino-led superhero movie.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
Release date: December 25
Director: James Wan
Starring: Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II
Details are scarce on Aquaman 2, but James Wan had teased at DC FanDome in August 2020 that the sequel will be a "little bit more serious" and "relevant" to today's world. Aquaman spin-off The Trench has been cancelled by Warner Bros, so the sequel is currently the only trip to Atlantis we're going to get.
2024
Joker: Folie à Deux
Release date: October 4
Director: Todd Phillips
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, Zazie Beetz
Like the first movie, Joker: Folie à Deux won't be part of the main DC timeline, but will bring back Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck, aka Joker, and pair him with the exciting prospect of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
In development
It's tricky to be 100% certain what is exactly in development at DC following the change of leadership, but these are the DC movies that we expected to see in the coming years assuming that they haven't been silently cancelled.
We should know more for sure when Gunn and Safran unveil their first DC slate in January 2023. For now, don't get too attached or excited by the prospect of any of these movies, except the Gunn Superman one as that's happening for sure.
Untitled Superman movies
We've got two Superman movies on the way, with one written by Gunn and focusing on the earlier days of Superman and one by Black Panther comics writer Ta-Nehisi Coates that is being produced by JJ Abrams.
Assuming that latter version gets made, we imagine it'll fit in a separate DC timeline like The Batman, with Gunn's version as part of the main timeline.
Supergirl
In development since 2018, a Supergirl movie was also set to give Sasha Calle a solo movie after she makes her debut as the character in The Flash movie. It was reported after Batgirl's cancellation that this movie might not be happening now, but we've heard nothing concrete either way.
The Batman sequel
Even after the change of leadership, it seems Matt Reeves is still writing a sequel to The Batman, which will bring back Robert Pattinson's Batman. Gunn has already denied reports that Pattinson's version would be integrated into the main timeline.
Lobo
It's not been 100% confirmed, but there are a lot of reports that Jason Momoa could pop up in the reworked DC universe as Lobo. Aquaman 2 is said to be his final movie as that superhero and he's been saying a "dream" project is happening under Gunn and Safran's watch, which many assume to be Lobo. Watch this space.
Green Lantern Corps
Another long-in-development movie that we have no idea if it's going to happen is Green Lantern Corps. Zack Snyder reportedly had to take John Stewart out of his version of Justice League as Warner Bros already had plans for him. Several names have been attached over the years, but it's not known who's working on this version, if anybody.
Static Shock
Black Panther's Michael B Jordan is on board as a producer of Static Shock, which is being written by Randy McKinnon, who wrote Disney+ movie Safety. We haven't heard anything about the movie since March 2021 when McKinnon was announced.
Zatanna
Shortly after it was announced that Warner Bros was working on a movie about the famous magician Zatanna, Promising Young Woman and Killing Eve's Emerald Fennell was confirmed to be writing the movie. It was set to be a HBO Max movie, but Warner Bros has supposedly moved away from those, so who knows if it's happening.
Cancelled
Like with the in development section, we could be jumping the gun with some of these, but it seems pretty likely right now that we won't be seeing the following in future years.
Wonder Woman 3
It seemed a certainty that Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot would team up for a third and final Wonder Woman movie, but that seems unlikely now as it was reported in early December 2022 that the threequel was no longer happening under the new regime.
Jenkins responded to the reports by saying that her "understanding" was that there was nothing she could do to "move anything forward" right now. It doesn't rule out a return for Wonder Woman entirely, but things seem bleak.
There was also set to be a spin-off movie focused on the Amazons which now seems even less likely to happen.
Batgirl
Even before Gunn and Safran took charge, Batgirl was a high-profile casualty at DC as it was revealed in August 2022 that the movie wouldn't be released anywhere, despite the fact it had already been filmed.
Man of Steel 2
For a brief while after his return in Black Adam, it seemed like we'd finally get a Man of Steel sequel with Henry Cavill back as Superman. Alas, it's not to be.
