The Last of Us episode three included a sneaky HBO Easter egg that you probably missed... though who could really blame you through all those tears?

The latest episode of HBO's apocalyptic drama sent viewers on an emotional roller coaster, with an unexpected romance taking centre stage between survivalist Bill (Nick Offerman) and survivor Frank (Murray Bartlett).

After years of living in post-apocalyptic bliss (minus a raid or two), Frank got sick and spent the majority of his days painting portraits of Bill — but one painting in particular caught the attention of some eagle-eyed fans.

In the episode's final act, Frank could be seen painting a self-portrait that was very clearly a reference to his character Dom from the HBO series Lookings. More specifically, a photograph taken by photographer Luke Austin.

Does this mean Dom and Frank officially exist in the same universe? Or maybe Dom left San Francisco after Outbreak Day, grew a beard and changed his name to Frank.

Either way, we'll definitely be keeping an eye out for some more HBO Easter eggs in the future. Game of Thrones/The Last of Us crossover, anyone?

Elsewhere in the episode, Bill and Frank bonded over playing Linda Ronstadt's 'Long, Long Time' on Bill's piano.

Explaining the decision to work this particular song into Bill and Frank's love story, co-creator Craig Mazin told IndieWire that he knew it had to be an "incredibly sad song" about "yearning for love" and "making peace with the fact you will always be alone".

After lots of research, Mazin's friend Seth Rudetsky finally suggested the Ronstadt song, which was used to "show the arc of commitment" between Bill and Frank.

The Last of Us airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in the UK.
