The Last of Us spoilers follow.

The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey has opened up about exploring Ellie's lesbian relationship in season 2 of the HBO and Sky series.

Anyone who has played the acclaimed video game series that the live-action show is based on will know that Ellie gets involved with a character TV viewers haven't met yet — Dina.

The romance between the young zombie apocalypse survivors has gone down as one of the defining queer relationships in fiction from the last several decades, so fans are very excited to see it play out on telly.

During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Bella spoke about how interesting it will be to eventually bring Ellie and Dina's love story to life.

"I’m really excited, to be honest, for the Ellie/Dina story," Bella said.

"I’ve watched a cut together, someone's made a phenomenal – I don’t know how they do it – like an amazing edit of just the gameplay, like Ellie and Dina’s love story. So I'm excited to play that out."

While we won't give away spoilers for what happens in the games, Bella also hinted about how Dina's arrival will completely change things between Ellie and her compatriot Joel, played by Pedro Pascal.

"[I'm excited by] the complexity of her relationship with Joel and how that gets decidedly more complex, and I'm looking forward to that," Bella said.

"And the violence that ensues is thrilling, in a way. To get to maybe explore that in a really safe environment, it will be cool. But I am nervous about it, too."

The good news is that fans will definitely get to see all of this play out, as HBO greenlit a second season following the hugely early success of the show.

The Last of Us airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in the UK.
